In dry parts of the Sahara the weather is very hot and dry. They get less then 8 inches of rain per year and the highest recorded temperature there is 136 degrees.

A taureg's life would probably be very different then somebody who lives closer to the Nile. A taureg makes most of their money by mining salt. Since the human body needs salt to survive, tauregs do this for a living. People who live closer to the Nile plant crops for a living.

People react to environmental conditions differently in different parts of the Sahara. People that live near the Nile River use irrigation systems to water their fields. People in the dryer parts of the Sahara usually cover their faces with their clothes so sand doesn't whip their faces and so they don't get burnt. The farmers use irrigation by digging ditches that water from the river flows to their farm lands. The dams effect this because they help so fields don't get flooded. They also hold the river's water in a huge reservoir that was named Lake Nasser. The land is changing the Sahel because less rainfall falls and it causes erosion and famines. The scientists are saying that climate changes are causing desertification, that is turning the Sahel into a desert. People are planting trees to stop the soil from eroding.

Chapter 2

1. The Savanna is different from the Sahara because the Savanna has grass and wildlife. The Savanna is closer to the equator and has two seasons; rainy and dry.
2. Herbivores and carnivores both depend on the Savanna for food. The herbivores eat the Savanna grass directly, but the carnivores eat the herbivores that eat the Savanna grass. The Savanna is also a habitat for both.
3. National Parks are becoming a problem because they are crossing country borders and causing conflict. They help the Savanna by preserving it and animals in it.
